If you have ever experienced a sharp pain in your tooth, it could mean your tooth root is infected or inflamed. Each of our teeth contains a long, thin strand of dental pulp—which provides the tooth with nutrients and nerves—that extends down to the tooth’s root. If the pulp becomes infected or injured, the tooth’s nerves die and, often, without endodontic treatment (root canal), will need to be extracted. Root canals allow the infection to be removed and lets you keep your tooth. In addition, keeping the tooth can prevent the remaining teeth from drifting out of line and causing jaw problems. Saving your natural tooth is always the preferred treatment instead of replacing a missing tooth with an artificial alternative.
